A PRICELESS RESOURCE

A PRICELESS RESOURCE

The following is an excerpt from “Loving and Living Yoga: Reflections of A Yoga Teacher”, a a collection of my writing on yoga, gardening, and life, which is being prepared for publication.

A PRICELESS RESOURCE

To talk about breathing is to talk about life. This invisible force is a powerful resource whose potential is often overlooked. One can live for some time without food and water but one cannot live without air. Most people, even Yoga students, fail to think sufficiently about their breathing habits. It takes constant practice to educate the mind to remain relaxed while teaching the body, at the same time, to stay alert but immobile. A great Yogi observed that the breath is harder to train than a lion. This wisdom encourages me and helps on those days when nothing in my practice seems to be working! It is through attention to the breath – the very essence of Yoga – that health, mind and spirits are improved. This knowledge is a motivating force, encouraging one to sit quietly every day and to practice breathing, naturally and peacefully.
